Juha Alakarhu, head of imaging technologies at Nokia, said via Nokia’s Conversations blog: “We’re really driving for innovation in key areas to deepen and enrich the imaging experience.

“I can’t tell you about the specific things we’re working on. Safe to say it’s very cool.”

Though revealing little, it’s good to see that Nokia’s promising PureView camera technology hasn’t been forgotten about. First seen at MWC 2012 in the Nokia 808 PureView handset (and later in a less ambitious capacity in the Nokia 920 Windows Phone), the mobile camera sensor technology is (so far at least) capable of capturing gigantic 41-megapixel images.

With the Nokia 920 failing to match the 808 PureView’s high-resolution 41MP snaps, confusion set in as to what the PureView moniker actually stood for. Was it a re-branding of Nokia’s imaging systems, or the name for a new technique of large sensor image cropping? Alakarhu sets the record straight:

“I think it’s important to underscore that PureView doesn’t mean any specific technology. It’s the latest and greatest in imaging.

“When you buy a Nokia PureView, you are getting our highest quality imaging innovation. Nokia 808 PureView solved the problem of zooming and sharpness, and for Nokia Lumia 920, it was low light,”

The announcement hints at a busy MWC 2013 conference in February for the Nokia and PureView teams. We’ll keep you posted as to what the “very cool” new developments prove to be.
