Dawnguard.jpgThe first DLC pack for last year’s PC game of the year, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has hit Steam. RPG adventurers are now able to download the vampire-packed Dawnguard to extend the already gigantic adventure further.

Dawnguard sees the Vampire Lord Harkon having returned to power, seeking to use the Elder Scrolls to destroy the sun itself. Will you join the Dawnguard to stop him, or side with the dark Lord himself?

However, Bethesda have still yet to reveal a release date for the PS3 version, citing performance issues as the reason for the delays.

A post on the official Bethesda Blog explained: “We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3. We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse.

“We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC. We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.”

Dawnguard is already available for the Xbox 360 at 1600 Microsoft points, and can be grabbed for PC through Steam for £13.99 by clicking here. Both ID Software and Bethesda Games catalogues are on sale through Steam right now, with Skyrim itself 50% off at £17.49.

  • People need to chuck out their consoles and get a good PC …stop buying consoles and console games. Consoles are ruining gaming. If you wanna game then game. They need to stop catering to the half-breed gamers.

  • Far too fucking little, far too fucking late Bethesda. Dumped my copy of Skyrim on some other poor unsuspecting soul and won’t be buying your products again.

  • Probably the wise choice.  It is now 3 games and many DLC Bethesda has put out that performed horribly on the PS3.  Skyrim has the same massive memory leak flaws as both Fallout’s.

The worst part of this has been they way they would marginalize that it is a “small number” of gamers affected and that “patches are on the way.”  But then never fix the problem, or even affect it all.  They just created more DLC that don’t work and actually makes the original games perform even worse.  In other words they have kind of been ripping off their PS3 customers and lying to their face about.  It took disappointed Skyrim fans to finally drive it home.  One look at the Amazon reviews for the PS3 version clearly shows it is not a “small number” and in fact more than half the people rate the game 1 star, mostly because of the performance issues.

So it is nice to see they at least now acknowledge the performance issue.  Its a step.  PS3 is half the console business so it seems like suicide for them to continue the f-you policy to PS3 owners.  But it is hard to see them correcting this problem, and ultimately I believe they will deliver a DLC (since they want the $$$) that probably does not perform very well.  The problem appears to be buried deep in some game engine that they’ve used for the Fallouts and Skyrim and can’t easily change out.  Otherwise they would have fixed these problems long ago.  The best hope is on the NEXT game, that they do some re-architecture of their technology stack.

In the mean time, the best thing to do is keep the perspective that it is just a $60 game and that maybe Bethesda will change their policy from one of ripping off PS3 customers.  There are choices to the gamer, you can hold out and buy used copies.  Wait for a used GOTY Skyrim edition vs buying the DLC hot off the press.  That is money to the game stores but nothing to Bethesda.

  • Well, I have been waging to see if dawnguard was going to be canceled for ps3., I know at least now it is not cancelled. 🙂 I think because ps3 fans have been waging so long Bethesda should give dawnguard a discount in the playstation store, that would be great… Thanks Bethesda

  • Bethesda should probably learn from this and perhaps offer more clarity regarding release dates and development. I’d admire Todd Howard and his team more if they just flat-out admit their mistakes rather than being mute on the issue.

  • I feel physically sick with the way the playstation community has been treated. I am a well seasoned and experienced gamer but even I am shocked at the mistreatment and abuse us playstation 3 players have received. Many unexperienced gamers say they will boycott bethesda products but i beg to differ this will make no difference to the evil machine Todd Howard and all his evil friends are running. They have calmed are tempers with silky smooth tweets from Peter Hines but i believe Bethesda needs to listen to their customers as they used too.

    Thank you

    • Well i got oblivion on on PC and the PC community is usually the longest lasting community for the game because of all the mods (we need mods for ps3) but i heard a rumour it may be released in September but in reality they are going to end up Losing there market since it hasn’t been released earlier, i still get freeze crashing issues on the PS3 for skyrim and I have the latest patch, one of my friends on xbox said that his still froze up from time to time and when he got the DLC it froze a little more often so if they release it now I doubt it would make much difference on the bug and glitch side

  • Finally, some communication. This hatred has only developed because they have pretended to be waiting for something new to come up. I would have been happy if they had just told us this in the first place. If this happens for the next dlc they should expect many of their new fans to leave the series when they have only just seen the brilliance of elder scrolls. This is very upsetting when a company Bethesda screw you over.

    • I completely agree. I don’t care about the exclusivity, I just hated the lack of communication. If Bethesda had said there were performance issues before the exclusivity ended and they were doing what they could to fix it, fair enough; they would have avoided the outrage that came about from that twitter announcement. If they bought dawnguard out on steam and didn’t give us any info on the ps3 status they would have dicked themselves out of my money. If its like this for the next dlc then they won’t be getting my any of my money again.

    • I agree but calm young one, you are obviously not as seasoned as i. I have fought through all 5 elder scrolls and thoroughly enjoyed them. I know everything there is to know about the elder scrolls and as such a loyal fan i will get in touch with bethesdas head office and report back to you because i like your fire, I am sure you will do well in the World of Tamriel.
