ouya-top.jpgOUYA, the open-source gaming console using the Android OS, has stormed past its Kickstarter crowd-funding goal of $950,000 to secure a mammoth $8,596,475 (£5.5 million) of funding. That’s a mind-blowing $7,646,475 more than it needed to bring the new games machine to market.

A brand new concept for a home games console, 63,416 people backed the project, with many pledging upwards of $99 in order to secure a console upon its intended release in March 2013.

“We did it gang! Together,” said the post by the official OUYA Twitter account.

OUYA has garnered some high-level support along the way, including the XBMC media player team, online cloud-gaming service OnLive and games developers Namco Bandai.

“Namco Bandai Games and OUYA are currently in active discussions to bring some of the world’s biggest gaming properties to the exciting new open gaming platform,” said Namco Bandai.

“Namco Bandai brings with it a rich history of iconic gaming franchises, from classics like Pac-man and Galaga, to seminal franchises like Tekken and Ridge Racer, and we’re excited to explore how we can work with OUYA to bring some great titles to the forthcoming console.”

A new website for the project, holding all the details of the console going forward, can now be found at www.ouya.tv .
