samsung-galaxy-camera-phone.jpgFollowing on from Nikon’s lead, Samsung are the next manufacturer to offer an Android-powered compact camera, in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy Camera.

Revealed at this week’s IFA 2012 conference, the camera uses Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS to let you download all manner of photo-editing and tweaking apps, carrying out the changes within the camera itself. You’ll be able to load up Instagram or your other favourite photo-filtering apps, and fire them off onto social networks like Twitter or Facebook using the built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connections.

What sets this apart from your average Android handset however is the superior imaging tech onboard. This is basically a full-blown compact camera running a connected mobile OS.

In other words, you’re getting a 16-Megapixel 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS sensor and 23mm wide angle lens, paired with a nifty 21X optical zoom. That wipes the floor with any smartphone camera we’ve ever seen, perhaps baring the Nokia 808 PureView.
You’ll also be able to shoot 1080p videos at 30fps

Whether or not Android powered camera’s become the next big thing or not, or whether Samsung’s offering has the chops to take on the similarly-spec’d Nikon Coolpix S800C remains to be seen. We’ll keep you posted with pricing and availability once we’ve got the specifics.
