Looking to take on the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS handheld consoles, it features physical gaming buttons (including dual control sticks), a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen and full Google certification, meaning you’ll have full access to the entire suite of apps and games available through Google’s Play Store.

Under the hood sits a 1.5Ghz processor with a Mali 400mp quad-core GPU, which should keep demanding 3D games running nicely.

“Until now, tablets provided gamers with touch controls that lacked response and compatibility, providing a disappointing gaming experience. As one of the main tablet uses, there is a strong need for a tablet that does more for gaming,” says Archos.

Archos promise that onscreen software controls for touchscreen games will automatically be mapped to the sticks and hardware buttons, and if that proves true (and the hardware is comfortable to use) they could have a real winner on their hands. We were really disappointed when Sony’s Xperia Play handset didn’t quite meet expectations, and there’s definitely room for a well-made Android gaming device. A decent classic gaming emulator in this could make it very attractive indeed.

The Archos GamePad is due to land in October 2012, for under £130.
