Amazon Phone rumours hot up as Windows Phone exec signs on

More fuel to the Amazon Phone (Kindle) Fire this morning with word coming through that Jeff Bezos’s clan have signed up a top level ex-Windows Phone executive.

Head over to Robert Williams’ (former Director of Business Development at Windows Phone) LinkedIn profile, and you’ll see that he’s now crossed the fence to take on the same title for Amazon’s App Store.

Williams will be in familiar company, with Amazon having recently acquired the services of another of the Windows Phone old guard, Brandon Watson who is now Amazon’s Director of the App Store.

With a major App Store push certainly on the cards, it’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination to start looking beyond the Kindle Fire tablet range, and start thinking of the possibility of an Amazon-branded handset.

Just yesterday the Wall Street Journal cited everyone’s favourite “unnamed sources” as having caught sight of a 4 to 5-inch Amazon-branded smartphone, with the same sources claiming that the design phase is almost complete and that full-scale production of the as-yet-unseen device could begin before the year is out.

Could we see an Amazon phone hit stores by the beginning of next year? It’s beginning to look more likely.
