Amazon making their own smartphone at Foxconn?

Reports are suggesting that Amazon are teaming up with long-time Apple hardware manufacturers Foxconn to develop a Kindle-branded smartphone.

Looking to build upon the success of their Kindle Fire tablet, Bloomberg are citing ‘people with knowledge of the matter’ who claim that Amazon are snapping up mobile and wireless patents to defend against the recent wave of infringement suits.

Aside from those snippets of info, there’s not much else to go on here yet, though it’s not the first time we’ve heard such rumours.

Rumours circulated late last year suggesting that Amazon would release a smartphone by the end of 2012. Again, like the Kindle Fire it would be incredibly cheap, subsidised by Amazon’s superb content delivery system, buying up eBooks, movies and songs.
