Office-symbian.jpgMicrosoft have today launched the Office suite of apps for Nokia’s Symbian platform.

Now I know what you’re thinking, Symbian is a dead duck in the mobile OS pond, what with Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft reigning supreme. But lets not forget that Symbian, at least in the numbers game, is still a force to be reckoned with, with over 19 million users as of Q3 2011 according to Canalys. And while a first party Microsoft offering has been long avaialble on Nokia’s WP7 handsets, Symbian users have had to make do with builds from outside developers.

“Third party apps can be good, but they often don’t feel quite like the real thing,” reads a statement on the Nokia Conversations blog.

“That’s why, as from today, you can download the Microsoft Office Mobile app right onto your Symbian smartphone.”

Packaging together mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, the app suite is available to Nokia 701, Nokia 700, Nokia 603, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia Oro, and Nokia C6-01 owners. The Nokia N8, Nokia E6 and Nokia 500 will get the apps shortly, with the 41MP Nokia 808 PureView camerphone shipping with the suite when it launches.
