Wii-U-top.jpgNintendo have spoke out against detractors claiming that their forth-coming Wii U console isn’t a true next-generation gaming machine as it appears to be underpowered.

While neither confirming nor denying the claims anonymous developers slamming the new machine, Nintendo kept to form, stating it’s all about the gameplay.

“We do not focus on technology specs,” a Nintendo spokesperson told Yahoo’s Digital Trends.

“We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

Eyebrows were first raised conceringin the Wii U’s processing grunt when a GamesIndustry International report suggested Wii U developers were struggling to replicate the visuals possible on a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

“No, it’s not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360,” said one unnamed developer. “The graphics are just not as powerful.”

These feelings were also felt by another anonymous developer: Yeah, that’s true. It doesn’t produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360. There aren’t as many shaders, it’s not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can’t quite keep up.”

It looks as though Nintendo are continuing in the gameplay-over-graphics trend kicked off by the uber-successful Wii. But with the console’s final specifications yet to be revealed, it may yet prove to be more powerful than developers are giving it credit for.

Keep in mind that it takes a few years usually for developers to fully get to grips with new hardware. These may be the growing pains of developers being taken out of their Xbox 360 and PS3 comfort zones.
