Google are to give their Calendar and Gmail services a fresh lick of paint in the coming weeks in an attempt to tidy up their catalogue of online apps.

Though it’s mostly cosmetic changes, Google will be updating the services as part of a Google-wide campaign to streamline user interfaces.

“We’re embarking on a series of interface updates to help strip out unnecessary clutter and make Gmail as beautiful as it is powerful,” said Google.

“This is part of a Google-wide effort to bring you an experience that’s more focused, elastic, and effortless across all of our products.”

Gmail updates include a number of new visual themes, as well as Preview and Preview (Dense) modes, which are designed to better accomodate different screen sizes using Gmail.

Google Calendar has a few more substantial differences, which include moving the “quick add” button below the create button, and changing the print and refresh links into buttons too. Visual indicators on events will now have to be moused-over before they appear too.

The changes are also expected to feature in new versions of the tablet and mobile apps, with Google aiming for greater visual coherence across devices.
