Many sources had expected a high-res Retina Display update to grace the iPad 2, but Apple’s tablet second-coming came and went with the very same screen that first featured in the original iPad. However, the Retina Display may yet feature in the next iteration of Apple’s slate, following some off-hand comments from leading blogger John Gruber of Daring Fireball.

Speaking in relation to digital magazines, Gruber casually mentioned that “These magazines and newspapers that render each ‘page’ as a static 1024 x 768 image are going to look like utter ass on the iPad 3′s 2048 x 1536 retina display.”

Gruber’s track-record for quietly slipping in key hardware details he’s uncovered into his posts has made him a leading commentator in the tech sphere, and his comments here certainly corroborate with further speculation found in the Korea Times.

“Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide a full high definition viewing experience” reads the story, which also states that Samsung and LG are both in the running to provide the nextt-gen tablet with a next-gen display.

The Retina Display remains a genuine possible new feature for the iPad 3 then. For many, the iPad 2 represented just an incremental update. With quad-core Hoenycomb tablets now being teased, a high-def display of this nature would help Apple stay one step ahead of the tablet curve.
