playbook-top.jpgRIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook has become the first table to receive the certification necessary to be used by White House officials and other US federal government agencies.

Given the thumbs up for the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification, RIM’s 7-inch tablet was praised for its security features, making it the US governments go-to tablet device.

Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at RIM was obviously pleased at his company’s achievement:

“This certification demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of security-conscious organisations and enables the U.S. federal government to buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information.”

However, these security measures have come at a price for PlayBook users; as a result, the PlayBook lacks a native email app, instead relying on a clumsy virtual bridge with a BlackBerry smartphone’s secure exchange in order to access emails, contacts and calendars.

Still, if you were wondering what to get President Obama for Christmas, you’ve now got your answer.
