Phantom Menace may be the only 3D Star Wars film

ClintonDarthMaul.jpgDespite the pleas of hardcore fans, George Lucas just can’t stop himself from tinkering with his beloved Star Wars franchise. From special editions to countless different re-releases on DVD and (this Christmas) Blu-ray, he’s re-packed the films every which way he can. However, the planned 3D re-releases sit on uncertain ground, according to series producer Rick McCallum.

Speaking of the 3D editions of all six Star Wars films, released in consecutive years from 2012 onwards, McCallum suggested that all rests on the success of the “Episode One: The Phantom Menace” conversion.

“One a year, if they work. If they don’t, then there will be just one [episode converted to 3D],” said McCallum.

Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, there’s the possibility that only the most awful of all the Star Wars films will make it into 3D, which seems like a real shame should it prove impressive. On the other hand, upgrading films to appear as if they were originally shot in 3D will almost certainly have mediocre results at best, so perhaps it’s a good thing that the original Star Wars trilogy will be left untouched.

To quote the one and only Yoda, “Uncertain, the future is”. We’ll keep you posted as to which films eventually make the jump to lightspee…sorry, the third dimension.
