Apple team plan moving into new Cupertino spaceship HQ

If you think their iPads and iPhones were crazy ideas, you should get a load of Apple’s plans for a brand new HQ. Following the unveiling of iOS 5, OS X Lion and the iCloud service, Steve Jobs then went before the Cupertino City Council to reveal his vision for a new spaceship-like base of operations for his team.

Perfectly round with no straight-edged glass used, the circular building would house 12,000 employees, with hidden parking, a canteen for 3,000 workers, more trees than a garden centre and, bizarrely, an apricot orchard. Surely an apple orchard would have been more appropriate, no?

“There is not a straight piece of glass in this building, it’s all curved,” said Jobs. “We used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use.

“And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it curve all the way around the building… It’s pretty cool.”

Should all go to plan an permission be granted to Apple, the site, just down the road from the current Apple HQ at 1 Infinite Loop, should be fully operational by 2015. You can view the whole meeting by clicking the video above.
