The latest iteration of Apple’s mobile software, iOS 5, may not support iPhone 3GS models.

That’s the latest rumour being spread by mobile analyst Eldar Murtazin who tweeted “Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs won’t be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.”

Apple have already set a precedent for discontinuing support for older handsets with newer versions of their iOS software. The first iPhone has long since stopped getting updates, while the 3G model was left off the list of supported devices when the iOS 4.3 update launched.

Though the iPhone 3GS is still on sale, dropping support for the handset would be in line with Apple’s growing, tiered smartphone range. Still, it wont make for happy reading for the millions of iPhone 3GS users out there.
