It’s a Star Trek fan’s dream: the ‘universal translator’ is here. Courtesy of Google’s new translation app for iOS devices, you can now speak into your mobile phone and it will translate for you.

The app, free from the App Store, will provide oral translations for 15 languages – just press the microphone icon next to the text box and voila. The app will translate words and phrases between more than 50 languages if you write them.

While Captain Kirk would be proud of how far we’ve come, it should be said that in Star Trek, the translation process happens instantaneously. This could well be a trick to make the films snappier to watch, but still, Google may want to look into it so us geeks can continue to dream.
