While much of the Western world have been getting all hot-and-bothered after last week’s spate of Nintendo 3DS launch announcements, the latest batch of PSP 2 spec rumours has us thinking our attention may be better focussed over at camp Sony.

Nikkei are reporting that Sony’s next handheld may well feature an OLED touchscreen and 3G connectivity, with the NTT DoCoMo providing the service in Japan.

A crisp OLED touchscreen would be a fitting alternative for those uninterested in Nintendo’s attempt at glasses-free 3D, while the possibility of a free 3G connection akin to that of the Kindles opens up some very interesting possibilites – 3G multiplayer gaming? Web browsing? Messaging?

This is on top of earlier rumours suggesting dual-cameras and a quad-core cell CPU will also be present.

A Tokyo press event is scheduled for January 27th, where we’re expecting to get some long-awaited confirmation after all this rumour mongering. If even half of the expected features were to materialise in the completed device, it’d be a very capable little handheld indeed.
