nokia-android-phone.jpgMore evidence to suggest Nokia are looking to migrate from Symbian to Android has come to light, after CEO Stephen Elop noted that the Finnish company are beinning to fall behind the competition.

Profits for the three month period ending Dec. 31 was €745 million ($1.02 billion), down a massive 21% from €948 million just a year earlier.Though overall sales rose across the quarter, smartphone market share continued to decline.

According to Elop, Nokia aren’t keeping the pace with rival brands: “We have a fundamental competitiveness problem overall.”

“The game has changed from a battle of devices to a war of eco-systems and competitive eco-systems are gaining momentum and share….We must build, catalyse or join a competitive eco-system.”

Android is surely the “competitive eco-system” of choice then? RIM’s QNX and BlackBerry 6 and Apple’s iOS aren’t going to budge from their own brands devices. And while Elop has a rich history working with Microsoft, Windows Phone 7 devices aren’t exactly flying off the shelves.

That just leaves a green, antenna-sporting Googler wandering around Nokia HQ to us.

  • Ecosystem does not equal Operating System. Elop stated “Nokia must build, catalyse or join a competitive ecosystem”; he said nothing about changing operating system strategy. As well, Elop emphasized Nokia’s forward strategy must ensure it’s ecosystem is “sustainably differentiated”.

Elop has doubled down on Qt as the development framework which not only synergizes 3rd party app developments across both Meego and Symbian OS’s, but as within Nokia and its UI development resources.

Shifting OS strategy will also hinder Nokia’s other key objective…to execute faster.

The Android rumor makes no sense in this context.
