SNK Playmore’s classic NEOGEO console is to get a new lease of life on the PlayStation Network it has been revealed today.

Something of a cult classic in gaming circles, the NEOGEO was ridiculously expensive when it came out in 1990, offering the power of top-end arcade machines in your home. With games knocking around the £200 mark, it was a pretty niche product, but it featured some of the best sprite based games ever concieved. You only have to look at the enduring popularity of the King of fighters and Metal Slug franchises to see that.

Bringing the games to a much wider audience than they’ve ever previously reached, you’ll now be able to get NEOGEO games for the PS3 and PSP over the PlayStation Network. As part of the console’s 20th anniversary, they’ll have their own dedicated part of the download store called the NEOGEO Station, with networked multiplayer modes added to many titles for the first time.

Among the games slated for release are Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters 94, Magician Lord and Samurai Showdown. Though prices have yet to be revealed, PlayStation Plus members will get Samurai Showdown for free, plus a further 20% off all other NEOGEO Station titles.

Head over to the official NEOGEO Station site for more details.
