We thought they’d been a bit quiet! Research In Motion introduced the BlackBerry Bold 9780 smartphone today – the newest addition to their BlackBerry Bold series, which I guess these days is their most popular range.

The Bold 9780 has a host of new features, including a 5 MP camera with continuous auto focus, scene modes, image stabilization, flash and video recording. It also packs 512 MB Flash memory and an expandable memory card slot that supports up to 32 GB of additional storage. The phone is supported on 3G networks around the world, and has a build in GPS for location-based applications and geo-tagging.

The Bold 9780 runs on BlackBerry 6, its new operating system which integrates new and rich WebKit-based browser that supposedly will render HTML web pages much quicker than the previous operating system. Users will now also be able to open multiple tabs to simultaneously browse different sites.

This phone really feels like RIM’s attempt to make a more social phone with integrated access to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, and similar to the iPhone it will now have a dedicated YouTube app.

The new BlackBerry Bold 9780 will be available from beginning in November. There is no word on which carriers will be stocking it in the UK yet.
