Pentax have today lifted the lid on their K-r camera, a little, lightweight addition to their DSRL range.

When we say little, were talking relatively here. Packing in a 23.6 x 15.8mm image sensor, the K-r was never going to be a pocket-friendly match for a compact, but in DSLR terms it’s pretty petite. According to the press release, Pentax have “downsized in-body shake reduction mechanism, and state-of-the-art, high-density packaging technologies that ensure space-efficient positioning and layout of the camera components”.

It’s a 12.4 megapixel shooter, making use of Pentax’s Prime II image processing engine. An 11 point wide-frame autofocus system is onboard, as is a spot beam feature for shooting in low lighting conditions.

The K-r can take as many as 6 shots a second (up to 25 in a single burst), and can also shoot 720p HD video. You can preview vids and shots on a 3 inch, 921k dot LCD on the back too.

The Pentax K-r is due to land in shops in October, shipping with a 18-55mm DAL at a price of around £600. Plenty of other lenses will also be available separately, including a 50-200mm one and a new interchangeable fixed focus length lens called the DA 35.
