iPad 2 Patent 1.jpgA new patent filed by Apple suggests there could be some interesting new features heading to the possible iPad 2.

Spotted by Patently Apple, a site that tracks Apple patents for clues as to what may feature in their new hardware, the next iPad build could have some significant differences to its predecessor.

First up is a revamped bezel, being dubbed the “smart bezel”. “The feature, whatever it is, is found in three distinct graphics to impress upon us that it is a distinct feature consistently found in the left bottom corner of the iPad”, the site notes. It seems related to an earlier Apple patent which detailed a technology that could identify its user just by the way they held the hardware it was implemented in. Included in the iPad 2, it could potentially load unique settings and customised homescreens dependant on who was holding the device.

The patent also features an extra connection on the iPad’s longest side, which would allow the tablet to be used in landscape mode when sitting in a dock.

Roll down for some more schematic images from the patent.

  • Looking at these schematics, it doesn’t look very different to the current iPad. I’ve seen on various sites that the screen size will remain around the 10″ mark so no change there and no sign of a rear camera like within the Galaxy Tab.
It will be interesting to see what new features will be available, especially as by the time this launches there will be android based tablets from a number of big players, meaning that Apple’s monopoly on the Tablet market will be long gone.

  • I agree. Why would apple release a 7″ with new and better features while continuing to sell a 10″. Besides that, a 7″ is to small. There’s not much of a leap or difference between 7 an the size of the iPhone/iPod touch (4.7). I hope apple doesn’t go ahead with this. 9.7″ is perfect. Just add some features. There probably wont be a retina display. The amount of money it will cost to double the ipad’s screen resolution would be ridiculous. The screen is already pretty clear. Do the right thing Steve. Cheers.

  • I believe this is an old design, and Apple dropped the 2nd connector when they launched the iPad. Also, this is not a camera, but a light sensor.
