Facebook have rolled out an update to their photo album service today which should make tagging snaps of your family and pals a little easier by automatically detecting faces.

The software can recognise faces using similar technology to that found in digital cameras, surrounding faces with a little selection box and then asking you to identify the person pictured. You just have to type part of the persons name in before a drop down box quickly gives you all near matches.

Speedier, but it’s a shame they haven’t gone all out and added the full facial recognition tech found in Picasa, which can not only recognise faces, but identify and tag individuals too.

Still, Facebook state that its the first of a series of improvements to the service, so we wouldn’t be surprised to find full facial recognition popping up sooner rather than later.
