Nintendo’s 3DS handheld games console was the big success story of E3. Bringing portable, glasses -free 3D gaming to the masses, Nintendo look set to have another winner on their hands. And now, we’ve got a release date for it to look forward to as well.

March 31st 2011 is the pencilled in date for the console’s release, which, considering the advanced state of the hardware seems a pretty long way off. So what will Nintendo be doing with all that extra time?

Well it seems that Nintendo treated the whole of E3 as a sort of giant, public, consumer focus group.

“You know typically, at an E3, our engineers are looking for feedback,” said Nintendo US boss Reggie Fils-Aime. “You know, we have an army of Nintendo representatives out on our show floor talking to attendees, getting reactions to everything in the device: the depth slider, the buttons, the sliding pad that is, essentially, an analogue-type stick.

“These are things that we’re looking to get reaction to, including the overall button placement. When we get all that feedback, then we’ll finalise the design.”

A work in progress still then! It’s exciting to think that the already-promising hardware could still yet get more features. We’ll keep you posted with any new 3DS info as it becomes available.
