iPhone 4 FaceTime will not use up your network minutes

As you’re probably aware by now, Apple’s next smartphone, the iPhone 4, is set to feature a voice calling function called FaceTime. Voice calling has (unsuccessfully) made a push for mass market popularity before, but FaceTime may have just got the boost it needs to become a must-have function, as it has been confirmed that it will not use up a caller’s network minutes.

Many had guessed this would be the case, as the feature only works over Wi-Fi internet connection. But as FaceTime is part of the voice dialling app, eyebrows were raised. An Apple spokesperson however has now confirmed that no minutes would be used:

“The voice call ends as soon as the FaceTime call connects. The FaceTime call is over Wi-Fi so does not use carrier minutes.”

Plans are said to be in place for a version of FaceTime that will work over 3G, though the data usage could be a little shocking if that came to be, especially with the incoming wave of capped data packages.
