iPad 2 already in development? OLED screen planned?

iPad and the App StoreUs Brits may not have even got our hands on the first generation of iPads yet, but it seems like Apple have got version 2.0 in the pipeline, with Eastern sources claiming development has already begun. And if the rumours are to be believed, that screen is about to get an OLED overhaul.

OLED displays are a fair bit more vibrant than the LCD panels currently in place in the iPad, but so far have proved far too expensive to use cost-effectively in anything larger than a mobile phone.

Analysts are predicting that OLED prices will drop eventually, but not until 2011 at the earliest. If the iPad 2.0 was to include an OLED screen and be released in-line with Apple’s traditional annual update schedule, it’s unlikely the prices would drop in time significantly.

An OLED iPad, while a nice idea, seems a little far-fetched at the moment.
