q1 umpc.jpgWaiting for the seemingly never-ending stream of tablet devices headed to stores this year to stop? Well, don’t hold your breath just yet; here’s another one on the way from Samsung, which they hope will prove more successful than their Q1 UMPC device (pictured).

Emmanuele Silanesu, national product and marketing manager for Samsung Australia’s IT division told APC that Samsung would release its own iPad rival “in the second half of the year” and that it would be focused on the home user.

Samsung Australia’s Philip Newton also discussed what he saw as the iPad’s shortcomings, in turn revealing what we may be able to expect from their offering: “The problems I see with the iPad are its processing power and (lack of) connectivity to a certain extent”.

“I do feel that that slate-type platform has legs but I think the legs need to be far more powerful, for example an Atom-based product which has far greater flexibility, not to mention inputs and outputs”, Newton continued. “This has more potential than an iPad.”

Samsung’s tablet will not only have the iPad to contend with. Other PC manufacturers such as Microsoft and Dell will also be entering the fray, with their Courier and Slate devices respectively.
