Nokia smartphones to get free global sat nav

Google may have recently announced its free navigation service, but Nokia’s announcement today totally trounces that one. From March, all new Nokia GPS smartphones are to get Ovi Maps. For free. WORLDWIDE.

While Google’s service is US-based only, Nokia’s Ovi Maps will be available in over 180 countries, offering 20 million Nokia smartphone users directions for 74 territories in 46 languages.

The turn-by-turn service also includes pedestrian routes, meaning those on foot can find shortcuts across parks and side streets. Perhaps best off all (take note Google), all maps will also be available offline, so 3G dead zones wont stop your journey in its tracks. Great for the Bruce Parry in you on those long, battery wearing trips to remote regions.

If you have a N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic or an X6 you can already get going with the service here.

Time to offload those TomTom shares we think.
