Ubuntu Linux releases version 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope

jackalope.jpgEveryone's favourite Linux variant, Ubuntu, has just released new version - 9.04. The update brings substantial improvements on 8.10 - the previous version. There's a new version of GNOME - the desktop - and there's a brand new kernel, so everything should be even more stable than previously.

Ubuntu also promises faster boot times, support for the ext4 filesystem which is less likely to be corrupted in the case of a power failure or crash, and support for wacom tablets. It's also the first version of Ubuntu to be designed with netbooks in mind, so there's an official netbook remix available alongside the main version.

If you want to give it a shot, head over to the download page and get an .iso file that you'll need to burn to a CD or USB stick. Then you can boot into it as you need to, and complete the install process from within the OS. I'll definitely be giving the netbook remix a try on my Aspire One, so look out for my thoughts in the new week or so.

Meanwhile, let me know what you think of the release. Message me on Twitter at @techdigest.
