Nokia to start making laptops – convergence and competition on the menu

nokia-logo.jpgIt’s official. Nokia is getting into laptops. Their Chief Executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, had this to say on the matter:

“We are looking very actively also at this opportunity.” Not a very exciting quote, is it? But don’t worry, the head of the world’s largest phone manufacturers isn’t as dull as he might seem. Judge him by this instead:

“We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a mobile phone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.” See, much more interesting. Convergence; we’ve all felt it coming and it’s good to see that it is indeed where the bigwigs are looking.

Essentially, Nokia would be fools not to, wouldn’t they? You’ve got all the computer makers heading into phones, why shouldn’t the handset manufacturers cross the other way? If they don’t start getting to grips with more sophisticated tech now, then their handsets-come-media-tablets are going to be seriously dull compared to what the likes of Acer, Apple and such can come up with in a few years’ time.

Anyway, the point is that it’s the official nod from Nokia. Expect a string of netbook/phone deals by early next year.
