Oh dear, this won't go down well with the Apple glitterati.
According the Wall Street Journal, people on "lower incomes" are now turning to the iPhone as a way of combining gadgets into one cheaper unit and saving money.
So, instead of having to worry about a separate phone, MP3 player, (rubbish) camera, broadband subscription and digital wristwatch, there's only one heavily operator-subsidised bill to worry about each month.
"We see that lower-income consumers are increasingly turning to mobile devices to access the Internet, to listen to music and for email," said analyst comScore's Mark Donovan, in a report we'd expect to cause at least a 15% drop in Apple's share price when US markets open today.
Nothing's going to diminish Apple's jumped-up aspirational appeal more than the thought that people from deprived northern housing estates are going to start running around with iPhones in their tracksuit trousers.

That was quite an insensitive thing of me to say, then, seeing as we're now living in Austerity Britain.
Chavs have about the same amount of intelligence as your typical Apple snob, I guess... Though in a fight, I know which one I'd rather end up against. A chav, being a street animal, would attack if angry enough (like, say, a wolf, only with more cursing and less elegance) whereas with the Apple snob you can either make a remark about how some device does something better than the Apple equivalent (during which windbag speech you calmly escape) or say the word "Newton" and watch them cry to death. Or, just, you know, hit them, as they'd be too pathetic to actually be any good in a fight. Double points if you break their iPhone in the process :)
