itunes-screenshot.pngKevin Rose, founder of Digg, has been right on most of the stuff he’s said so far about the forthcoming iTunes and iPod updates, and this morning he pushed out an update to his blog with a tip of some rumours that might make it into the final release.

What’s new in iTunes 8

iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.

With iTunes 8, browse your artists and albums visually with the new Grid view; download your favorite TV shows in HD quality from the iTunes Store; sync your media with iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (2nd generation), and iPod touch (2nd generation); and enjoy a stunning new music visualizer.

Rose says it’s consistent with everything he’s heard, and the “Genius” function sounds very Apple-y, so I wouldn’t be surprised if something like that shows up. I’m feeling less confident about the iTunes Unlimited subscription rumours though, because there’s been very little mention of it since. I think that one might have just been a figment of someone’s imagination.

zune-software.jpgOne other thing I’ll pick out of this rumour is a mention of “grid view”. Could this be the same view that Zune have been using in their software (pictured) for over a year? It’s certainly a lovely way to browse through covers ( I much prefer it to cover flow), but it would be a bit of a shock to see Apple steal quite so blatantly from their rival.

    • You’re right – I forgot about that. Still, it seems a bit unfair to accuse Microsoft of ripping off Microsoft 🙂
