Opera release 9.6 beta

opera.jpgGosh, everyone’s going browser-mad lately. First IE8, then Chrome, now Opera are releasing a new version. Opera, of course, is the fourth largest browser out there, after IE, Firefox and Safari. It has a small, but passionate, fanbase, which includes 2.6% of Tech Digest readers.

Proponents of Opera argue that it’s one of the most compatible browsers out there. It was the first browser to pass the demanding Acid3 rendering test. It also tends to have a lot of cutting edge features before other browsers. The last version included the 9 windows “speed dial” feature seen in Chrome, along with a function which syncs browsers sessions between computers automatically. Very handy.

The new beta has a couple of nifty features – extending browser syncing to the address bar, so any address you type in on one browser will autocomplete on any other. It also lets you preview RSS feeds within the browser and they’re promising a considerably zippier browsing experience, too.

So, as you’ve recently installed Firefox 3.1, IE8, and Chrome, why not whack Opera on your PC/Mac/Linux box, too and give it a try? You can download it right here. I don’t need to tell you that it’s free.

  • Well, it should be…
Yep what.s good for the goose is good for the gander. Great idea.
Notice that the Chinese know how to do a stimulus package, while no one in power seems to know how to do a stimulus package here in the US.

  • I love opera as it has a lot of widgets. If it has add-ons it’ll be really great. I am not impressed with chrome. It lacks somewhere. Opera the first released with tabs.

  • Are you aware that Opera 9.6b1 doesn’t pass the Acid 3 test? Only a WinGogi tests build did it.

Opera 9.6 will be the best released browser (once released) at the Acid3 test, but won’t be at 100/100.
