Medion AKOYA Mini E1210 notebook out on 7th September for £279.99

Medion has announced the full specs and price of their netbook a little quicker than expected after the first sniffs last week at IFA. The Medion AKOYA Mini E1210 notebook is strictly speaking right on the edge of the definitions of laptop and sub-notebook measuring up with a 10″ TFT widescreen display and weighing a slightly bulkier than expected 1.2kg.

Medion themselves say that it has more of a laptop feel than most mini notebooks but, frankly, I quite like the sound of that. Those 8.9″ netbook keyboards are just too damn small for my digits.

The other tell-tale sign of its aspirations to greater PCs is the fact that it runs on Windows rather than Linux but the good news is that we’re talking XP Home Edition. Vista not included.

Like all good netbooks, though, the AKOYA Mini E1210 is powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, the kind of chip that gives me goosebumps when I compare it to the hoover that is my old Dell.

Memory-wise, we’re looking at 1GB of DDRII SDRAM and an 80GB hard drive with, sadly, no solid state in sight but there is at least a graphics card to speak of in the form of an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.

It’s set up for all the mod-cons of connectivity with 802.11b/g/Draft-n for your 300 Mbit/s of wireless LAN, a multi card reader, three USB 2.0 ports and one for VGA as well. No mention of Bluetooth but I’ve got my fingers crossed, and there’s always plenty of room for the likes of the MoGo Dapter anyway.

We’re promised an “extended battery life”, which I’m hoping will justify the 1.2kg mass, and if you’re worrying about whether it’s going to fit into your handbag, you might like to know it measures 260mm x 180mm x 19mm, which doesn’t sound too bad to me at all.

I’m in the market for something along these lines and I’ve got to say that I’m quite excited by this as a good value option. Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and as soon as I’ve had a first hand taste, I’ll let you know. Oh, it has a webcam as well by the way. Did I mention that?

The Medion AKOYA Mini E1210 notebook is priced at a wonderfully reasonable £279.99 and you can pick it up in either black and silver or plain white from any Aldi store as of 7th September, which was Sunday last time I looked – presumably not after 4pm then.
