eBay Nutcase of the Week: Woman auctions virginity

Comments (9)

ebay-logo.jpgA 22-yr old Californian student has attempted to auction her virginity on popular online auction site eBay. She claims she's doing it to pay for her college education, but a huge online debate about sexuality and morality has surfaced.

The student, who isn't using her real name, attempted to place an auction on eBay, but the site turned her down. She's instead going to be auctioning it at a public event in a brothel in Nevada - the "Moonlite Bunny Ranch". She's hoping the bidding will reach US$1 million.

The woman, who has a degree in Women's studies, wants the cash to fund a masters degree in "marriage and family therapy". How many families will want therapy from someone who's happy to auction their virginity remains to be seen. The student told a TV station:

"I don't think auctioning my virginity will solve all my problems, but it will create some financial stability. I'm ready for the controversy, I know it will come along. I'm ready to do this. We live in a capitalist society. Why shouldn't I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity?"

She also admitted that her mother didn't agree with her decision. The owner of the brothel, one Dennis Hof, unsurprisingly did: "I think it's a tremendous idea. Why lose it to some guy in the backseat of a Toyota when you can pay for your education?" he told reporters.

Do you think this is wrong? Or should people be allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies? Let us know (gently, please!) in the comments.

I say let her do it. If someone wants to pay to teach this girl how to have sex, go for it!
Personally I never appreciated the mess and awkwardness of the first time. Give me a girl who might even teach me something.
To each his own

She should get about $40 $50 thats what its worth being auctioned or sold. Any person in their right mind would not want to bid on a someones virginity as its worthless in term of money. Virginity means so much more when you intend spending your life with someone special. (Give her a wham bam thank you mam.)

Sorry I think I stumbled onto the wrong website. I thought this was Techdigest, not a "are my morals better than yours?" website.

Jezus H! It is her body, she should be free to do as she pleases with it. How disgusting that other people feel that they can dictate how SHE SHOULD behave! What exactly is the difference between selling one's virginity and giving up all ones worldly wealth to a church cult! All free personal decisions surely.

AND WHY IS THIS ON THE NEWS?

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2008/09/mainstreaming-prostitution.html

The media is providing rationalization for prostitution and giving it airtime? Why? Is it only because Sex sells?

CNN - Thanks for the great coverage.

Although I would never do it... I support her. College is super expensive. It's not like shes doign it so she can buy jewelry purses and crack. She also said that she wouldn't let just anyone do it. She wanted it to be someone who was serious about her.... and maybe something could develop from it. It would make a killer story to tell your kids that that is how you met their daddy... LOL!

I think what she is doing is wrong, I understand that it's her body and she is old enough to make her own decisions but what message is she sending. As a student I know how expensive school can be, however selling your virginity is not the answer. Young girls who maybe in the same position as this young women may do the same thing because they thing it's right. Doesn't she understand that young girls will model what she does and how can she provide therapy for marriages and families, people will look at her and think her profession is to become a prostitute. That is what she is presenting herself as selling herself not very classy nor does it fit her profession. It is more like she may need the therapy.

Courtney,
