radeon-hd-4550-graphics-card.jpgATI’s been busy thinking up new ways to offer slightly different packages of graphics cards, and the result is two new “entry level” boards sitting in the 4000 range.

The HD 4550 is the star new bargain, offering an impressive 512MB of DDR3 RAM for a US price of $59. The HD 4350 is the cheaper-still 256MB version, weighing it at $39. Both have HDMI outs, so are ideal if you’re after a cheap solution in the home cinema realm.

Based around the technology of the Radeon HD 4800 series, the 4550 supports DirectX 10.1, runs at an energy efficient 20 watts under full load thanks to AMD’s 55nm manufacturing prowess and… well, if you’re interested in reading about how many stream processors and texture units it has, you’ll have to click that “Continue reading” link. Information like that is deemed “way too geeky” for the main page.

The HD 4550 features 80 stream processors, eight texture units, a 64-bit memory bus, operates at a clock speed of 600MHz and the 55nm processor contains 242 million transistors. The HD 4350 is much the same, only its 256MB of RAM is only DDR2 spec and it runs at a lower clock speed.

Aren’t you glad you know that?
