Well just look at the new Sony Walkman E series range of PMPs all lined-up in their Sunday best looking remarkably like iPod Nanos but then, I suppose if you can't beat them, copy them as closely as possible without it being too much of a give away. In fact if it wasn't for the FM radios in the Sony NWZ-E435, E436 and E438 I might have thought they were Apples.
They come in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB versions respectively and weigh in at nice and spritely 50g and measure less than 8.5mm thick. That's a little bigger than the Nano but then you get a 2" QVGA TFT LCD display for your trouble which'll come in handy for all your videos that you can watch in their 262,144 colour glory.
The battery life rather depends on what you're doing with it. At the worst you'll get four hours out of a full charge - if you're watching video at 768kbps - but, if you stick to just music, anything up to 14 hours for decent quality MP3s is possible, although, as with most battery claims, I'd take that with a serious pinch of salt.
The E series plays all the usual file forms including AACs which, we're told, you'll even be able to drag and drop straight from iTunes. If you can't beat them indeed.
No pricing as yet but we should be seeing these new Walkmans in the next couple of months and, to be fair to them at Sony, they may be damn good - certainly as good as the Nanos.
If you can't bear to buy an Apple, then these look like a good option but if you don't mind filling Jobs's pockets then wait to hear about the price before you make your mind up.
