Rhapsody embraces iPod with MP3 store, seeks to challenge iTunes

rhapsody_logo.pngRhapsody is the latest online music service to try to take a piece of the action from iTunes, as it announces its new MP3 store featuring DRM-free tracks which can be played on iPod, as well as other portable music players.

Started as a subscription-based music service offering song streaming for a monthly fee, Rhapsody was incompatible with Apple's music players. Now, Vice President Neil Smith says that the company is "no longer competing with the iPod" but "embracing it".

They're not keeping quiet about it, either, with a $50 million marketing campaign in the US alone, seeking to make a dent in iTunes' 70% market share.

The service appears to be live in the UK now. Whether it, along with the likes of Amazon, can challenge Apple's dominance remains to be seen.
