It seems Gear4 is only happy when they're making iPod docks. With not even a week since they released the StreetParty III, the High Wycombe company's bods obviously switched one on at the launch party, cracked open a few celebratory beers and built the Gear4 HouseParty4 amid giggles that the public will buy anything.
There's nothing wrong with their new dock but there's nothing much right with it either. It has 2 x 15W speakers, it plays FM radio but you know you're in trouble when one of the main selling point is "Easy iPod play - plug your iPod in and it plays automatically". I'd be rather disappointed with a dock that didn't work out of the box, wouldn't you?
It does have a remote control but Gear4's efforts at graphic equalisers really wind me up. They give you seven presets of "Jazz, Pop, Rock, Flat, Classic, Bass", which sound like six to me, but how about just letting us make the settings ourselves?
Basically, the HouseParty 4 is a dock. If you want to buy it, you won't be stung at £69.99 but you're unlikely to be thrilled either.
