itunes_logo.jpgApple has announced that users of the US iTunes Store can now purchase selected movies for download on the same day as the DVD is released.

New releases and catalog titles will be available from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.

New releases will cost $14.99, with most catalogue titles costing $9.99. For now it seems as if these are just standard definition titles, but I’d imagine in time Apple would like to extend it to same-day Blu-ray releases.

The service requires the latest version of iTunes, currently 7.6.2, and downloaded films can be watched across the range of compatible iPods, iPhones, and Apple TV.

Still no sniff of movies in the UK iTunes Store, or indeed any other outside the US, but we’re resourceful enough not to let that bother us, right?
