We're seeing an increasing number of ways of paying for goods, services, and events using mobile phones and smart cards, with McDonald's restaurants in Japan releasing the "Kazasu Coupon" loyalty and payment programme.
"Kazasu Coupon" means "Contactless Coupon" and is currently in 175 stores, allowing fast food fans the opportunity to choose and pay for meals, and redeem coupons, using RFID-enabled mobile phones.
It requires an application to be downloaded, and registration via a web site, after which the customer can choose coupons and start using the service. Of course, it's not just the customer who benefits from loyalty rewards and faster service -- the company also gets a nice personal history for each customer.
Here's a nice little video to show the concept - at least I think it's trying to show the concept. I'm more concerned whether I'm supposed to sing "I'm lovin' it" after the ditty.
