GTA IV did the business. It smashed the previous UK sales record held by GTA San Andreas and sold 609,000 units - on its first DAY.
San Andreas managed to shift just over 500k copies when it launched in 2004, and that was when PlayStation2 was at its all-crushing peak. For GTA IV to surpass that so drastically is an extremely impressive performance.
For those of you following the hard and bloody CONSOLE WARS, Chart-Track reports that 55% of those copies were sold on Xbox 360, with the remaining 45% going to PS3 owners. That's 335,000 Xbox 360 sales and 274,000 on PS3. PS3's previous best launch day seller was Gran Turismo Prologue, which shifted a "mere" 80k. Crikey.
And if you're not one of those 609,000 you might have a long wait - the game's totally sold out across the UK right now with spending £55 on eBay your only option right now - although a few retailers are expecting a fresh supply of GTA IVs tomorrow.
