A new gaming device is set to be launched by a research and development defence lab in Oklahoma known as MeshCentric and it’s called the H_T because that’s most people’s reaction when they work out what this bizarre looking handset is.

It’s described by CEO Scott Fry as a “ubiquitous cellular mobile gaming Wi-Fi hotspot”. I was with him up until “ubiquitous”. In layman’s terms, it’s a gaming handset, a one-mile-range wireless router and one weird mutha to look at.

The idea is that you can use it at home but, more interestingly, you can strap it to your body and go gaming, walkabout style. It was inspired by the inventions of rogue gamers with their over-clocked CPUs to give it a kick far greater than any hand-held and combined with the hotspot, what you end up with is a seriously powerful mobile computer that can use to play against other gamers in a real-life environment.

So, you can be walking about a real landscape with real GPS coordinates playing a virtual game in a semi-virtual world. Brain melted yet?

Naturally, this beast is very much at the prototype stage just now and I do appreciate that perhaps this is more important in terms of the world of possibilities than anything else but, come on. I mean, come on! You’ve got to be kidding me?

Mobile phone focused walkers are bad enough but are you telling me we’re going to getting gamers walking round with machines strapped to their bodies and head up displays on their arms playing war about the streets? Sounds like fun actually.
