I'm not going to lie to you. In terms of gadgetry, this new range of DeLonghi toasters and kettles at John Lewis are not the most mind-blowing kitchen appliances I've ever seen but they are very pretty.

Apparently one of the exciting features is "rapid boil" which is useful because I can imagine getting rather frustrated if I had to wait for my cup of tea while the sun worked its magic on the water.

In terms of the toaster, we're supposed to be thrilled by a "removable crumb tray" but as far as I'm concerned, when it's time to bother with that, it's time for a new toaster.

What I will say is that at £60 a piece, these retro chic necessities are a bargain. They come in red, black, blue and chrome and all guarantee an "oooh, I like your kettle" unless they're looking at the toaster.
