Phonofone II offers gramophone-style sound for your iPod - and needs no power

phonofone.jpgNot the cheapest iPod audio system on the market, but the Phonofone II is certainly one of the more interesting.

Not only because of its gramophone-style looks or indeed its ceramic build, but because this is a sound system that requires no power. It uses 'passive amplification' to convert music from a portable player and earphones into a 55 decibel output. In terms of quality, it's apparently better for blues, classical and folk rather than electronic sounds and rock, so if you've an iPod full of Kraftwerk or Metallica, perhaps this isn't for you.

But if your tastes a little more conservative, you can pick up the Phonofone II for $500 (around £250).
