Facebook harassment case thrown out of court - it is now legally "OK" to look up exes

facebook-harrassment-michael-hurst-free-man.jpgPoor old Sophie Sladden and Michael Hurst split up after 16 months together, following an argument about her watching the Eurovision Song Contest.

Now, I'm no relationship expert, but if you're going to split up after a row over what to watch on telly it's clearly symptomatic of deeper issues in the relationship - ie, one person hates the other person quite a lot.

Hurst rather ill-advisedly sent Sophie a Facebook friend request a month after the break up. "It made me deeply uncomfortable and angry. I had previously made him aware that the attention was unwanted," said Sophie, of Michael's online advances.

In his slightly shaky defence, Mike said "I typed in her name out of curiosity and I may have accidentally added her as a friend," which sounds entirely believable to us and not just a COMPLETE LIE.

Sophie declined and blocked him, then complained to the police - which resulted in yesterday's court case for harassment. A court case the judge threw out, saying "The Facebook incident has not been proved by the prosecution beyond reasonable doubt and we therefore have to dismiss the charge, but we suggest you refrain from contacting her any more."

So it's OK to Google/add/message anyone you've ever met. Tonight. While drunk and sad and lonely.
