Pakistan bans YouTube - and accidentally closes site to entire world

youtube-down-pakistan-islam.jpgOver the weekend, the Pakistani authorities decided to deny access to YouTube across all of Pakistan, due to a video deemed "insulting to Islam" that was found on the site.

But due to unspecified "routing issues," this lead to a global disconnection of the site - with YouTube itself confirming that users around the world couldn't see its collection of idiot-generated tat for two hours on Sunday.

"YouTube had been asked to remove the link, which they did, and we have subsequently ordered the unblocking of the site," said a spokesman for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, confirming that Pakistani citizens will now be able to browse the world's most banal collection of cat videos once again.

So there you go. If you had trouble finding Tom Cruise going berserk about Scientology or clips of girls dancing in front of their webcams on YouTube over the weekend, that was why. Pakistan broke the internet.

Don't get too angry with Pakistan, mind - it does have nuclear weapons. We don't want World War III staring because one of you lot disses Pakistan in a YouTube response. Although that would be quite a fitting way for modern society to come to an end.

  • Anonomous

We are anonomous. Pakistan has fallen in our sights. Ha Ha Ha. Now you are in trouble. This is the end.

    We do not forgive.

    We do not forget.

    We do not have girlfriends.

    We do not eat veg.

  • This is hard to believe. How can a middle-east country shut down youtube which isn't even hosted in Pakistan.

  • Oh yeah, forgot about that.

Just out of interest, what *do* we want to be remembered for?

  • Gary

Andy. Shhh. Or you'll trigger WWIII. I don't think that's what Tech Digest wants to be remembered for.

So, presumably, YouTube will now be taking down any video that is offensive to any religion, viewpoint, person, or indeed anything else.

    No, didn't think so.
