Will SpiralFrog's million users help it beat its streaming rivals?

spiralfrog_screen.gifThere’s been a fair amount of negative publicity about ad-supported music download service SpiralFrog in the last year, focusing on its launch delays and financial losses. But the company at last has some good news to report.

SpiralFrog says that it’s now getting over one million unique monthly visitors, and expects that figure to exceed 1.2 million by the end of January. It also says it has more than 400,000 registered members, spending on average ten minutes on the site every time they visit.

If you haven’t heard of the site before, basically it gives music away for free, legally, funded by advertising. It’s got a catalogue of over a million songs, through its deals with major and independent labels.

I wonder if life is about to get tougher for SpiralFrog though, if more people start using ad-funded streaming music services like Imeem and Last.fm. Their tracks can’t be transferred to digital music players, admittedly, but it’s a valid question.
