Everyone's favourite geek plaything, Lego, celebrates 50th birthday today

The date marks the day the Lego company filed the patent for the plastic brick, and since then they’ve produced two million bricks every hour of every day, with 62 pieces for every person in the world.

Lego plans to mark the anniversary in many ways, but are holding a worldwide competition to discover just who is the best young Lego builder. With every country sending its national champion to the headquarters in Denmark, the world title will be fought over by hundreds of children.

Bet they can’t make anything as geektastic as the Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak playset!
