Great news for us thrifty viewers - DivX will soon be supported on the PS3, and perhaps the Xbox 360 too. You know what that means, right? BitTorrented goodies will be playable on the gaming machines, meaning any video file at the touch of your fingertips can be viewed, right there, on your home TV.
Finally, a reason to buy a PS3! Finally, a reason to dust off the 360 from underneath the coffee table!
DivX hasn't announced when the firmware upgrade for the PS3 that'll allow for this will take place, but support is apparently included in the software-development kit version 2.0, released back on the 2nd of November. Expect illegal downloads to soar by 6,054% after they release it.
Unfortunately it hasn't been officially confirmed by Microsoft as yet, but DivX certainly are keen to have their codecs supported by the Xbox 360, with CEO Kevin Hell recently responding, eloquently as ever, to a question posed about the rumour, "Yes! that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that".
